Cerebellar Cortical Motor Encoding
1966 - 1979
During 1966-1979 the motor neuroscience community coalesced around a unifying framework in which movement arises from distributed cortical and cerebellar circuits encoding planned actions and learning-driven refinements. The period emphasized cortex-to-cerebellum interactions, cerebellar cortex learning loops, and error signaling as a core mechanism for skill acquisition, alongside robust involvement of sensory feedback in action selection and timing. Methodologically, electrophysiology and single-unit recordings revealed how motor plans and real-time feedback shape neural commands, with anticipatory and predictive coding emerging as central components of motor control.
